Stainless Steel Sheet Size, Thickness and Weight

Knowing the sheet count and weight early helps with budgets, transport and site handling. Here is a quick guide for designer sheets.
Standard size
Our standard sheet is 1220 × 2440 mm (about 4 × 8 ft), which covers about 2.98 sq m (32 sq ft). Other sizes are available on request.
Approximate weight per sheet (1220 × 2440 mm)
- 0.8 mm: 18.9 kg
- 1.0 mm: 23.6 kg
- 1.2 mm: 28.3 kg
- 1.5 mm: 35.4 kg
- 2.0 mm: 47.2 kg
These are theoretical weights at about 7.93 g/cm³, the usual figure for SS 304. Actual weight varies with grade and tolerance. Please confirm with the quotation.
Formula: length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.93 = weight (kg).
Estimating how many sheets you need
- Step 1: work out the area of each surface.
- Step 2: divide by 2.98 sq m, the area of one standard sheet.
- Step 3: add a wastage allowance for cuts, grain direction and pattern matching. It depends on your layout, so tell us the drawing and we'll check.
Our sheet calculator does this for you.
Choosing a thickness
The right thickness depends on the backing, panel size and fabrication method. Tell us how the surface will be fixed and we'll advise before you finalise. See the processing guide for how each finish handles cutting, bending and V-grooving. Our guide on how to specify designer sheets lists what else to decide.
